Feștelița – the village with the most innovative energy projects, might become an eco-village

Feștelița - the village with the most innovative energy projects, might become an eco-village.

“As mayor for the 5th term, of Feștelița village, so far I have realized so many beautiful projects with the support of international partners. I always followed the calls of international projects and I tried to take advantage of every opportunity. Today we are glad that we can be partners with the project “MĂ IMPLIC”.

In 2016, we created the municipal enterprise, so we outsourced the service of water delivery, management of public spaces, and street lighting. In 2019 we have approved the development strategy of the locality, which aimed at two basic topics: the construction of local roads and the development of the household waste collection service. Now, with the support of the project “MĂ IMPLIC”, we will create the communal household waste collection service, which will also be managed by the municipal enterprise.

Previously, the waste was deposited on the site of an abandoned farm. People, due to the lack of a public service, but also of a specially arranged place, transported individually and dumped illegally the waste among the ruins of abandoned buildings. It was not one of the most beautiful landscapes, especially on windy days, when plastic bags were easily carried around. This created great inconvenience for a local farmer, who has his greenhouses and fields near the former farm.

Three years ago, we decided to set up a landfill, on the site of a former clay extraction mine, a place further away from the village and more isolated, due to the specifics of the relief. Of course, the development project was coordinated with the Ecological Inspectorate. It was quite easy for us to convince the locals to use the new landfill. The introduction of the communal waste collection service will greatly facilitate the lives of the people in the village, especially those who could not afford to organize their evacuation of the waste from their households and who had to store it in their yards.

In 2020, the village of Feștelița obtained the status of an energy-smart village. It is the first village in the Republic of Moldova which has smart street lighting, a park with photovoltaic panels, but also four boiler houses operating on biomass. It all started seven years ago, at the initiative of the mayor’s office. We aim to reduce the consumption of traditional energy resources and protect the environment from CO2 emissions. Soon, solving the problem of garbage in the village, cultivating the culture of waste collection, why not later even the culture of separate collection. Waste, collected separately, can also become a source of energy. So gradually, Feştelița can become the first eco-village in Moldova. ” – says Mr. Nicolae Toderean, the mayor of Feștelița village.

In the period 2021-2023, the village of Feştelița will implement a project aimed to improve the street lighting service, with the support of the Project “MĂ IMPLIC”, financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by SKAT Consulting. Following the signed agreement, the LPA will benefit from funding (maximum 65,000 CHF), consulting, and capacity building services. The Project “MĂ IMPLIC” will help the LPA and the service provider not only to improve the infrastructure but also to develop long-term approaches to keep this infrastructure in good shape and to have sustainable models for financing the provision of services. In our work, we will ensure that local citizens, employees of LPAs, NGOs, economic agents are actively involved in modernizing public services in the community and especially that the less advantaged have equal access to these services.
